Aldi has reported its most successful festive season to date in 2024, with sales exceeding £1.6bn in the month leading up to Christmas. The supermarket saw a year-on-year growth of 3.4 per cent, while its seasonal products increased by 10 per cent and its premium range saw a 12 per cent rise compared to 2023.
Aldi UK’s CEO, Giles Hurley, attributed the success to the company's strategy of reducing hundreds of prices last year as part of its mission to make high-quality, affordable food accessible to all, as reported by City AM.
"Our offering of outstanding quality British products at unbeatable prices was a winning combination yet again this Christmas as customers wanted to celebrate in style after an uncertain year."
For the fourth consecutive year in 2024, Aldi remained the UK’s cheapest supermarket, charging an average of £100.29 for a shopping list of 56 branded and own-label groceries in December.
Its Christmas dinner was also ranked as the UK’s most affordable, priced at £32.04 compared to a national average of £49.33. Over the festive period, shoppers purchased around 50 million mince pies and approximately 25 million British pigs in blankets.
Aldi also reported strong sales of British products during the holiday season, with a record 350,000 fresh British turkeys sold, more than 400 tonnes of British beef, and nearly 3 million British Brussels sprouts. The German-owned company’s success has seen it steadily gaining on rivals’ market share: Aldi is projected to near third-largest grocer Asda’s market share by 2027 and could potentially surpass it by 2028, according to findings from GlobalData.
Giles Hurley stated: "As we look ahead to the new year, which for many will mean the prospect of living costs rising again, many families will be nervous about what 2025 holds."
